As a mom, staying at home to be with your kids is one of the best presents you can have. You get to watch over your children as they discover new things, guide them with their homework, play with them, prepare their meals, and a whole lot more. However, there are also a lot of challenges that may come your way. Doing the laundry, maintaining the house, hearing kids fight over toys, and other petty squabbles are just some of the challenges you need to face every single day. And these challenges can be a reason for you to lose sight of why you wanted to be a stay at home mom in the first place.
Whether you decide to be a stay at home or just happened to fall into it due to unexpected circumstances, adjusting to this new role can wear you down. You need to manage how to juggle responsibilities while taking care of your children twenty-four hours a day.
The moment you wake up in the morning, you will have to constantly decide and take care of different tasks. You have to watch over your kids, prepare the food, do the groceries, feed the pet, and more. In short, a mountain of responsibilities awaits you every single day. Even if your children are napping in the afternoon, you still have a lot of tasks to finish. You’ll be lucky if you have a half an hour break to take a shower and eat properly in a day.
However, instead of complaining over these matters, why not adopt a couple of new habits that can help you become a highly effective stay-at-home mom? Try and put into practice new habits to keep your cool throughout the day.
Prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically
Highly effective stay at home moms need to prepare mentally, emotionally, and physically before starting their day. It helps them conquer whatever challenges that may come at them. You can do this by doing a quick yoga or meditation before leaving your room. Take even just 15-30 minutes of your time to calm yourself and prepare your mind.
As for preparing physically, you still need to look presentable when you need to take your kids to school or go to the groceries. You don’t always have to be in your yoga pants. When you feel good about how you look, it will be easier to feel happy within. You will also feel less stressed despite the number of tasks waiting for you at home.
Your exercise routine does not need to be strenuous. You can do cardio workouts while walking your pets, taking your kids to school, or while cleaning in the kitchen. Play lively music whenever you need to clean the house so you can feel energetic as you go through tasks. A few squats or a few minutes of Zumba session wouldn’t hurt as well. Instead, it will clear your head and energize you so you have more energy to get going.
This is because exercise helps in releasing feel-good endorphins that are responsible for getting you into a positive state. You need this positivity, especially whenever you feel stressed or frustrated. After your workout, you will feel relaxed as the tension leaves your mind and body.
Be easy on yourself
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Every parent goes through the challenges of feeling unsure of decisions or feeling guilt for some of the choices you made. Don’t feel awful for losing your temper or forgetting a doctor’s appointment. The important thing is you learn from them and try to improve in your new role.
Don’t hesitate to ask for help
When you feel like you already have too much on your plate, ask for help. Reach out to your friends, to relatives, to a babysitter, or to a trusted neighbour. Anyone whom you trust, and is willing to lend a hand in watching your children even if it’s just for a few hours. To be a highly effective stay at home mom, you need time away from all the stress once in a while. Don’t feel guilty about it. Whenever you feel that you are wearing thin and see signs that you are about to burst, reach out for help. Give yourself some time to go to the gym or spa – anywhere where you can relax and forget about the tasks at hand.
Connect with other Moms
Staying at home everyday can sometimes be lonely. This is especially true when many of your friends don’t stay at home and are at work instead. Don’t compare yourself to them as this will only make you feel dissatisfied with your decision to become a stay at home mom. What you can do is to connect with other moms and create a meaningful relationship with them. There are a lot of ways to do this like joining communities for stay at home moms and dads. Befriending the parents of your kids’ friends at school. These are the same people who have the same tasks and interests as you so it will be easier to connect with them. Be brave enough to look for opportunities. Aside from gaining new friends and meeting new people, you will also learn from them. This will be very helpful and is a great opportunity to learn, especially if you are a new mom.
Rest whenever you can
Take advantage of times you can take a nap or just rest. You also should not miss bedtimes as you need all the energy you can get to prepare for the next day. These hours of rest will keep your sanity and help you manage all unexpected problems that may arise.
Have a routine
If your children wake up, take naps, go to school, do their homework, and play at the same time each day, you will rock at being a stay at home mom. The predictability of your family’s day while still keeping their needs in mind, will help you finish all your tasks on time.
